Chronicle Concering Books Crown of Feathers (Crown of Feathers #1)
I had a sister, once…In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.
I promised her the throne would not come between us.
Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.
But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.
Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.

SynopsisVeronyka is a war orphan who was raised by her deceased grandmother and her older sister, Val. Veronyka and her sister are "animages", and have the ability to communicate with animals. This is not uncommon in the world they live in, but ever since the war their kind have been persecuted. Val and Veronyka want nothing more than to become Phoenix Riders, like the heroes who fought during the war. After a terrible betrayal, Veronyka flees from her sister and finds a sanctuary for her kind,4.5/5 stars Life was easier when you didn't care - or so he'd thought. He'd spent so much time afraid of hurting, of losing everything again, that he'd forgotten life wasn't worth living - worth saving - if you had nothing to live for. Now that I've read this book for the second time, I'm finally posting a review of it. This book is absolutely brilliant. The story is unique and fun to read, the characters are all intriguing and easy to fall in love with, and the mysteries are cleverly hidden
5/5 StarsI loved this book with my whole YA fantasy and mythical creature loving heart! It was everything I needed to pull me out of a mini reading slump. The story begins with the history of two sisters, one born without magic and one an animage and phoenix rider. Both sisters were fighting for the right to rule the kingdom until they tore it apart. Years later, two animage sisters, Val and Veronyka, are fighting as well, but to survive in a world where animages are imprisoned or enslaved and

Well - I wanted to love this book a lot more than I did.First off obviously the cover is gorgeous, but I am assuming that the phoenix is supposed to be Xephyra - so where is all the violet plumage that she is described to have? Also the map doesn't show the country that Pyra split off from? I love a good fantasy map but this doesn't show a lot of the locations mentioned, some major, and I don't like it at all.The majority of the first 75% of the book was not necessarily boring, but a LOT of
5 stars!Wow. It wasnt perfect, the beginning was an info dumpbut this was amazing, and one of the best series openers Ive read recently in YA fantasy. World Building: ★★★★★Characters/Character Arcs: ★★★★Readability: ★★ 1/2Plot: ★★★★★Pacing: ★★★ 1/2Crown of Feathers is impressive, but it is not for the casual YA fantasy reader. I enjoy reading dense fantasy fiction and I had a hard time connecting to the first 100 pages.Veronyka and her sister, Val, are two animages on the run from the current
While I enjoyed the world and the historical aspects, the pacing of this just felt all over the place, and really dragged on in parts! Crown of Feathers centres on a world which contains Animages, the most proficient of which are Phoenix riders, who are persecuted after a rebellion. This felt a little Mulan-esque to me at points (which is definitely bonus points!).I found the characterisation of Phoenixes and their magic and intelligence brilliant! And the world itself and the characters were
