Description Concering Books Soldier's Heart: Being the Story of the Enlistment and Due Service of the Boy Charley Goddard in the First Minnesota Volunteers

In June 1861, when the Civil War began, Charley Goddard enlisted in the First Minnesota Volunteers. He was 15. He didn't know what a "shooting war" meant or what he was fighting for. But he didn't want to miss out on a great adventure.

The "shooting war" turned out to be the horror of combat and the wild luck of survival; how it feels to cross a field toward the enemy, waiting for fire. When he entered the service he was a boy. When he came back he was different; he was only 19, but he was a man with "soldier's heart," later known as "battle fatigue."

Criticism Out Of Books Soldier's Heart: Being the Story of the Enlistment and Due Service of the Boy Charley Goddard in the First Minnesota Volunteers
This book was kind of cheesy, I thought. It was a great book for teens to read about the Civil War, reading all about the bodies, the shock, and other things. It was in third person, which is not my favorite, but I will still read. The boy sneaks into the Army, not knowing what was coming for him. He survives several brutal battles. Charlie comes home from the war...but he just can't stand life. He won't kill himself, not yet, but it's just so hard for him. He lives in a house far away from

In the book titled Soldiers Heart, Gary Paulsen takes you on an adventure with a character in the book my the name of Charley Goddard. The book tells this boys story and how he was not of age but joined up in the army to fight in the Civil war. He was with the Union fighting the Rebels. Charley experienced war first hand and is traumatized, as should any other seventeen year old boy fighting a war. I enjoyed him telling the stories of how he traveled and where he was stationed. Charley notes

It was good i didn't really understand the ending but it was really really really good.

This book is more of a none fiction title than fiction. The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer. Historically accurate, captivating and emotional.

Terrific book. My students were riveted to Charley's story. A must read for US History (part 1) classes everywhere, and BONUS.... the story is only 102 pages, so kids won't get tired or bored with it. My hat is off to Gary Paulsen with this absolute WINNER of a book!

it was really gory
