The primary importance of this book is that it lets out a candid plea voiced by an intellectual with a mixed background of supposedly unbridgeable cultures but acknowledged by the west. The book doesn't offer anything strikingly new but the style in which Maalouf delivers his analysis re-opens many discussions which marginal western thinkers have tried to bring to the mainstream for years. Maalouf is an excellent traveler of the middle-way and his acute common sense and voluntary self-criticism
Wow. This is a great little book that I want to recommend to everyone interested in current events and history and the middle east and the west and how it's all connected. After reading this, I wanted to go back and ask my high school teachers why we didn't read this... shouldn't we have read this? [Okay, that was a long long time before this book existed.]Of course this is one man's take on the situation in the Middle East, which is always changing, and the relationships between the western and

I can not regard the effort spelled here more than an oscillation between a lamentation and an exhortation that is characteristic of righteous , preachy-type species. In terms of rhetoric , undoubtedly it is well articulated ,yet the information provided are customary and in terms of analysis and critical reading is terribly poor . Sometimes , his pacifist , worried and fatherly tone , seems to me like an incarnation of his compatriots ; namely Jubran Khalil Jubran and Mikha'il Na'ima Ironically
Enlightening. Maalouf did an excellent job portraying today's world, both East and West, from cultural, ethical, religional point of views, staying in the middle with equal distances to every side. Although he emphasized in almost every other chapter that the opinions he was standing up for was solely and totally are of his own, between the lines, those were also the opinions he wished every human being had deep down. between extreme doubt and hope, Maalouf has outstandingly laid down a passionate vision and voiced concerns for the future of our world, transcending cultures and nations. wonderful read.
The book is not a like classical Amin Maalouf novel but actually it is so good. Main theme expresses that about people culture and histories regarding the Middle East, Asia and Europa nations and how impact the future. The book could read second time also, because included very benefit information. I recommended.

Ilustration In Favor Of Books Le Dérèglement du monde: Quand nos civilisations s'épuisent

Not nearly as well written as his fiction. A bit disjointed at times. Some of his theories seem far-fetched to me.
