Powerful book. The author talks about taking history into our heart. Beautifully written.

Wonderful book to listen to and educational at the same time. Didn't really learn anything particularly new about slavery but knew nothing about the Grimke sisters prior to this book. If only authors who wrote history text books for our schools could be this interesting. Especially enjoyed the way the story was presented from the perceptive of two life time friends - one a slave owner and the other a slave. Couldn't wait until the end but sorry when it over. The narrators of the audio version of

Couldn't finish. So depressing and upsetting seeing a close-up view of slavery of women-blacks slaves and women of white families.

Could not finish. Depressing.

I am always slightly wary of a white author who takes on the voice of an African American slave. At the very beginning of this book, I remained wary. But my concern was ultimately allayed. The two voices of Sarah Grimke the young white girl whose father owns a plantation, and Handful, the young black slave given to her on her 11th birthday, are written with a sensitive understanding (but not sentimentality) of the lives of women of both races at that time, and of the horrors of slavery. Gripping with history explained that I had no idea of. This is beautifully written and keeps you wanting to learn more.
