Weigh Up Based On Books In the Land of Milk and Honey
Lyrically written memoir of author's trip (in 1948) when she moved with her family from Oklahoma to California. Great similes and metaphors--perfect for a mentor text. The writing creates a beautiful picture in my mind! Another book I need to own!

Read for 5427 classThis would be a good picture book to read with 5-7th graders for teaching literary elements. It's chock-full of similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, and allusions. However, I think the diction and all of the comparisons make it too advanced for the typical picture-book age readers.

I did love the illustrations of the U.S. in this and I loved the way you could feel moving across the country. It did evoke the time and place of the author's real migration, and I enjoyed being able to taste that. I wonder, though, if children would be as lifted by the narrative as I am as an adult. In many ways it felt, despite the accessible writing style, like a more grown up feeling.

Historical fiction in poetic form- would be great for multicultural storytelling or to introduce a social studies unit.

The illustrations are just wonderful and the expressions on young faces pull you right into the book. The poetry is exceptional, as the poet is an expert at using sensory language. There is a short narrative biography in the back that is helpful, too.

In this love song to California, Joyce Carol Thomas tells of her own train journey from Oklahoma to California in 1948. Lyrical verse carries the reader along the journey and the atmospheric illustrations of Floyd Cooper are a perfect fit for the dreamy text. My favourite spread shoes 2 children in the car watching the people on the street. The girl's expression simply makes me smile.
