About Trench Coats, Episode II: Jacob’s Story

Building on the highly acclaimed Trench Coats, Episode I: The Meeting , the second episode finds Pia Sabel asking Agent Jacob Milik to research the attempt on her life. Certain she’s conjuring up a nutcase conspiracy theory, he changes his mind when she disappears off the streets of Washington DC and someone throws a bomb in his car.

Agent Jacob might be a ladies man who has a crush on his boss, but he’s all business now that she’s in danger. He methodically follows the clues that bring him ever closer to her, discovering shadowy connections to ousted CIA officers, State Department appointees, and questionable asylum approvals. But everything points to a bigger question: What connects a State Department appointee to Syrian refugees and child traffickers?

A great twist on the format. I like it. Jacob tells of Pia Sabel's disappearance and uncovers clues in the continuing serial. Jacob wakes up in bed with a Spanish-speaking woman name of Bianca, so I was hooked right there. Great story & quick read. I'm lovin it.

Part 2 of the ongoing Pia Sabel Trench Coats saga is an interesting departure, both for this serialized novel and for author James himself. For one thing, Pia plays essentially a walk-on cameo part. More to the point, this group of chapters is told from the point of view of Jacob, one of Pia's operatives, as he becomes enmeshed in the latest mess his boss has created.Jacob is personable, a bit of a rake, and good company from the first page. James should write in first-person more often; his

We continue The Trench Coat series from the point of view of Jacob, one of Pia Sabel's team of operatives. The action comes pounding at his door on what should have been a lazy day after a long "party" night. The one thing Pia Sabel does best is move at lightning-quick speed when she is on the task at hand. We are taken from Jacob's apartment to the streets of D.C. where the team is set-up and ambushed, as Pia "trades" her life for the child of a man who is on her side of the Syrians, or is he?

I loved this new twist, having Jacob tell the story of Pia's disappearance. He was a bit-player in The Geneva Decision but now has a big role. He's likable because he's a real guy, scamming women and calling in sick. I love it! Now I'm on to part 3 to see what happened to her!
