Explanation In Pursuance Of Books Cities of Flesh and the Dead

For most, CITIES OF FLESH AND THE DEAD began generating, if not grabbing, attention when the manuscript-in-progress won the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award, but I'd already experienced various poems in journals and magazines, though not knowing the author--who, much later, became my wife-- except as a name. "Powerful" is the adjective that came to mind, however, for these were poems that knocked me barefooted, as they say in the author's native South.  Or made me want to slap my mama.  (See "Objects of Desire.")

A collection of syllabic poems (in an unusual 15/5) pattern and sonnet sequences, CITIES is especially notable for its poems about travel and its poems about music.   In fact, the volume can easily be described as one consisting of love poems to various cities, both at home and abroad, and the displacement that follows so many Americans around like the black dog (of depression, though Blakely is first and foremost a writer of celebration, not its opposite) that followed Churchill, who makes an appearance in these pages.  So do Tony Perkins, Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Joe Orton and his murderous lover Halliwell, Sylvia Plath, Tina Turner, Philip Larkin, Robert Johnson, painter Walter Sickert, and, by implication, the IRA, as well as their countrywoman Mary Kelly, the last victim of Jack the Ripper.

How exciting to learn after closing the book, which finally came out in 2008, on "Sonnets for Tina: A Call and Response" that she's working on a collection of poetic "duets" with the aforementioned bluesman Mr. Johnson.  Maybe she's sold her soul to the devil.  In any case, she writes like an angel, and one on fire.
