I picked this up as an audio book, a set of 21 CDs, at a book sale some time ago. I listened to the first 9 CDs mostly on a bit of a road trip, but when I got home my fragmented 10-20 minute drives just weren't as conducive to audiobook listening. At that point in the story, I was only halfway engaged. I wanted to know how it ended, but not badly enough to listen through another 12 hours over the course of many weeks. I was completely hooked by the plot, but the writing and character development brought the rating down a few points. The Island of Nantucket (with all of the people, buildings, ships and technology within a certain radius) was mysteriously sent back in time to the year 1200 B.C. Disappointing. I loved the premise of this book (modern Americans sent back in time, need to cope and rebuild society) but the sex and race stuff was just ick, and the violence was unappealing. I found the rape scenes really disturbing and wish they had not been included. I dropped the book midway. While I loved the plot idea, the rest of the book was horrendous. The storytelling, characterization, and pacing were all terrible, just not worth slogging through such horrible writing, the POV change from one sentence to another was so absurd.
