Out of the rolling ocean the crowd came a drop gently to me,Whispering, I love you, before long I die,I have travelld a long way merely to look on you to touch you,For I could not die till I once lookd on you,For I feard I might afterward lose you.Now we have met, we have lookd, we are safe,Return in peace to the ocean my love,I too am part of that ocean, my love, we are not so much separated,Behold the great rondure, the cohesion of all, how perfect!But as for me, for you, the irresistible seaIf it took me a long time to get through this anthology, it's because Whitman is so hit or miss for me. When I feel it, I'm in love. The rest of the time, he makes me a little bit uncomfortable. His elegies are breathtaking, and "The Sleepers" is mesmerizing.
This took me around six months to read, but it was worth it. No one told me how queer and horny and just altogether EXTRA Whitman was, which totally would've made me get to him sooner.How extra was Whitman? The first (self-published) edition of Leaves of Grass, featuring the aptly named "Song of Myself" didn't have an author on the front, only this: (view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)]Yes, that is an engraving of Whitman being the cool kid hanging out under the bleachers and whose not-at-all-studied
Walt Whitman In The American Poets ProjectWhen I learned that the American philosopher Richard Rorty's late work "Achieving Our Country" had praised Walt Whitman (1819 -- 1892) ,his patriotism, and his optimistic vision of America, I had to revisit Whitman. I had earlier been reading and thinking about Rorty.I found this edition of Whitman's "Selected Poems" chosen and introduced by the noted literary scholar Harold Bloom which was published as an early volume of the American Poets Project

Again, not a poetry buff, but any well/widely read chap has to dig on some Whitman at one time or another.
