Commentary To Books Godforsaken
I read this book for my hometown Young Women's Book Club. We are trying to challenge ourselves to constantly be reading books out of our comfort zone. This book was really interesting and different than anything I have ever read. The author, Tarryl Janik put it into words, "while simultaneously twisting an insidious tale that will leave the reader both repulsed and attracted."This book was very gripping and I kept wanting to know what happens next. Also, this book taught me a lot of information about different religions that I knew very little to nothing about. I learned that there are three different types of Shamanism within the Guyana Highlands. These are piya, alleluia, and kanaima. "Piya shamanism involves both curing and killing. Alleluia shamanism involves chanting, and kanaima is assault sorcery...murder. Violent death."
This book did a really good job at playing with my emotions. One second I hated a character, the next I am super grossed out and then I could visualize myself in another character's situation. This is how I know Tarryl is a magnificent writer. He was able to cover a variety of topics, situations and information in his book that had nothing to do with my everyday experience, but yet I could still make huge connections and put myself in the characters' shoes.
He played with my emotions in different ways. The beginning of the book starts off with everyone and everything in the book being filthy. It takes place in a small town that no one ever leaves and everyone is dealing with poverty and their own personal problems.
I felt for so many characters and the foreshadowing was extremely strong. I liked how Tarryl added little bits of information about what will happen to the characters after they become unimportant to the book and aren't in the story anymore. Take for example we found out that Seth will be diagnosed with an aggressive carcinoma in three months and he will have to endure twelve weeks of chemotherapy.
He dealt with sexism amazingly in this book. Every time that a male had to help a female he commented on it. "Another white knight. Another damsel in distress. Another cliche dis-empowered woman in need of saving. Another woman in need of a man. Just like a thousand stories told before. Another female victim." By pointing this out he is acknowledging that so many stories have a "weak" female that needs to saved and of course, only a man can do that. Also, that tends to be the happy ending of every fairy tale, but he did not let that happen in his book. Later in the book something horrendous happens to a female by males and she gets her sweet revenge. "It will be ok Roy, I'm here to help she says. A white knight in distress. A woman empowered. In charge of her own destiny. She needs no man to save her. She is no victim. Not anymore."
Tarryl also covered the topic of rape from a women's point of view. I can only imagine how hard this has to be when your writing from the opposite sex's experience, but he did a fabulous job. He called out everything that is wrong with the rape culture, besides just the rape itself. "She is sure that somehow someone will blame her for all of this. Maybe they will say she had it coming, or that how she dressed gave them the wrong idea. Surely someone will say it was her fault. That being raped was God's justice, that being violated was her karma. Somewhere some man will tell her that what happened to her was justified. They won't even see jail time she thinks. The newspapers will make her out to be some kind of whore, or worse, make Bill and the has-been Stingers out to be the victims."
I highly suggest this book to anyone that is looking for a book that "while simultaneously twisting an insidious tale that will leave the reader both repulsed and attracted." Also, for readers that want to find a book that covers different large scale issues in a different way and in a different light.

I read this book in one sitting; a couple of minutes is all you need to get hooked into this book. Godforsaken has a mixture of horror, suspense, and some cultural enrichment from the Amazonian Shamanism aspect. This book can be graphic at times so read with caution if you have a weaker stomach. All in all, this book was a fascinating read and definitely not my usual go to book, but very good none the less. I look forward to reading the next book!
Really draws you inI really enjoyed this book. It drew me in fairly quickly but it is graphic which isnt everyones taste. Personally didnt bother me but it makes you want to find out more
Tarryl Janik has a B.A. in religious studies and anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a M.S. in cultural anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His fieldwork is in Paramakatoi Guyana South America. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D in cultural anthropology at UWM. The author creates a very visual tale with this story. There are some pretty heavy and adult themes in this book including rape. If you have a weak stomach, this is not for you as the author does not shy away from graphic language or content. I have never heard of so many different ways to describe body parts. I thought that it was too graphic for my taste, and usually that is not an issue for me.
If you are looking for a fast-paced, intriguing, delightfully disturbing read, then look no further. Author Tarryl Janik has woven a tale of horror, suspense, and sex, and combined it with elements of Amazonian Dark Shamanism, to create an amalgamation that is at once entertaining and educational. Janik's characters are accessible and realistic, and his writing style is modern but poetic. As an added perk for the busy adult, "Godforsaken" is a fairly quick read. If you make time for no other
