K. M. GRANT was inspired by her own family history to write How the Hangman Lost His Heart. Her ancestor, Colonel Francis Towneley, or Uncle Frank, was the last man in Britain to by hanged, drawn, and quartered. His head was passed down for generations of her family until it was finally reunited with his body just after World War II, when it was buried at St. Peters Church. It was Uncle FranksI pretty much avoid historical fiction and straight-up romances, so when I had to read Blue Flame, the first in this 13th century romance series, I was not happy. But I actually liked it because of the nuanced story and complex characters, so I didn't whine when I got the second one. This sequel deepens the relationship between the protagonists (Cathar Raimon and Catholic Yolanda, now separated by more than class and religion since Yolanda has been sent to Paris to marry another and Raimon is a
I was so excited when I finally got my hands on this book! I had been waiting over a year and so had great expectations for it. Unfortunately this volume in the series was not as good as the previous one. Yolanda and Raimon both have a lot of growing up to do (and thankfully within fifteen pages of the end, they both seem to have achieved a measure of maturity) and Hugh, rather than continue to be a villan, becomes quite a likable character, who really loves Yolanda despite it being a forced
I liked Book 2 better than the first book in this exciting, turbulent series--the characters were deeper, less black and white, and Grant's writing seemed richer. Yolanda is taken to Paris, marries Hugh against her will, while Raimon, holed up with the Flame and his followers in the hills above Castleneuf, is forced to surrender to Aimery. How in the world is Grant going to wrap up all of the threads in this intriguing story, without taking the easy way out and killing somebody off? I can't
This was better than the first- you really get to know the characters and there is lots going on.
It was a good follow up on the story that began in Blue Flame. I am waiting for my library to get the next book so that I can find out what Happens to the star crossed lovers!!
The Perfect Fire trilogy continues to surprise me as the series goes on. I certainly have fallen in love with our crafty new character and K.M. Grant is an excellent writer. The description in the book is spot on and you can really feel what the main characters are going through. Hardships are plenty and magic is flowing. For some reason, I can't seem to pick up the next book because I'm afraid that I won't be impressed with it as much as I was with this one. There is definitely a fire in K.M
