Narrative Conducive To Books Eldens Hemlighet (Sofia #1)
This book falls into that murky middle ground between young adult and middle grade. Because really, the subject matter that it deals with (a young girl living in Mozambique whose village is massacred is forced to flee to safety with her mother and siblings. Then she stands on a land mine and ends up a double amputee) is too mature for middle graders. But because the protagonist is about 11, it's a hard book to sell teenagers on.But I digress.
This book is based on a true story and it's translated from Swedish. The writing is fairly simple but still compelling, and Sofia is very definitely a protagonist that you just want to hug because life has dealt her such a shitty hand. Still, she's a precocious child who doesn't let anything stop her. I'm definitely glad I read this, though I'm not sure I'll bother to read the other two books in the trilogy.

A heart-rending novel that gives the reader a glimpse into the African rural life. It provokes your emotions but definitely gives your conscious a wake-up call. 7/10 👌❤This book takes the statistics that every 30 seconds someone steps on a land mine, makes it real as the author tells the story of an African girl who flees bandits when her village is destroyed, finds a place to live, steps on a land mine, and is helped to recover. It's both a horrendous and a touching story based on an actual event. It is a must read unless you already know what it's like to be affected by a land mine.
I read this book when I was ten. It was for school. I was not much for reading back then, I have always had a very hard time focusing. It's still a problem but I try not to take it out on my reading, although I am such a slow reader. Whenever people think about book nerds, they probably imagine people reading one book a day. I cannot do that. It takes time for me to finish a book. But I'm still a book nerd. Just having trouble focusing. Even though I didnt like the books our teachers forced us
At the heart of this book is the horror that so many have faced (especially children) because of the millions of landmines that have been placed around the world. The book is set in Mozambique and is based upon the true story of Sophia Alface. The book is clearly written for children because the sentence structure is so elementary. A good book to open your eyes to a huge problem in the world.

Not sure if my mom read it to me or if I read it alone, I think I could barely read when I found out about this book, but I loved it so much I dreamt of it. I read other books by Mankell after that, none of the adult stuff though, have to get around that sometime... But Le secret du feu is definitely the one that struck me the most. I cried soooooo much every time I read it ! I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews, saying the writing is poor. Maybe the English translation is not so great ?!
Read for year nine english, semester oneI really hate giving books 1 star. It makes me feel yucky and bad. For my review, allow me to start on the positive side: 1) Being a true story-Sofia is a very brave girl. I respect her and what shes been through Now let me continue onto the yucky and bad feeling negatives: 1) ATROCIOUSLY written. 2) Very little description, 3) bland characters,4) awful style,5) shocking dialogue 6) slow moving 7) Scenes with potential are wasted 8) dull 9) lacks the X
