Don Carlos started out being... incredibly hetero, dramatizing a unilateral infante-to-queen mother incestuous love when, about two thirds the way through, the play suddenly inverts itself into one of the most brilliant queer dramas I have ever read, featuring a homosexual who classically falls for a straight man and sacrifices for this dumbass. The ending, wrapped up by the last-minute appearance of the Inquisitor, ties a big knot on the thematic critique of the Roman Catholic Church.Mary
